The zombie technology of the magazine suffers the final insult: Mygazines.com, a magazine-sharing site. The hard part in nailing them for this blatant copyright violation is that they’re trying the corporate ownership passed around by p2p trick. As it happens, the magazines are uploaded with all original advertisements, so what the publishers would need is auditable views on the site that their advertisers would believe.

One of my other pastimes is Wikipedia. We’re all about the free-as-in-freedom content — not just no-cost with-permission, but wide-open to reuse, including commercially. This concept makes culture industry people’s heads explode, but we did make #8 website in the world that way.

The hard part is photos of entertainers. Bad live shots, fan snapshots and so forth under a proper free content licence always supersede something that isn’t free content. (Looking pretty isn’t the mission — reusable and remixable content is. So we’re hardarses about it.)

I’m wondering a useful way to reliably get entertainment industry promo photos to flock to us. The third-best shot of the shoot, say. I suspect the worst fan snaps would be an incentive. So where and how do we publicise this? (I’ve asked this before.)

(If you’ve taken decent photos of someone with a Wikipedia article but no good pic, we’d love ‘em. I’m slowly going through my own twenty years’ photos. CC by-sa is fine, and requires your name staying attached to the image details page. Follow in the steps of Joichi Ito.)

Factsheet 5, the magazine of fanzine reviews, is to recommence publication after a three-year hiatus.

The new publisher is Dwayne-Michael Alborn, a 22-year-old marketing student who was “interested in going into the catalog sales area … With the numbers we ran and the numbers Seth had, I’d say it’s a definite career opportunity.”

Factsheet 5 was started by Mike Gunderloy and ran from 1982 until late 1991. It was taken over by R. Seth Friedman, who published it from 1993 until 1998, covering the time of the zine craze of the ’90s.

Friedman has been trying to sell the magazine for some time, having stated in late 2000 that “if a new publisher is not found by the end of January 2001, the magazine, its web site and P.O. Box will be shut down for good.”

Here’s a press release sent out yesterday by Tom Wheeler:

THE RETURN OF FACTSHEET 5

After a 3 year hiatus, FACTSHEET 5 is coming back! A new editorial collective has taken over and we hope to have the first issue out by the end of the year.

Factsheet 5 is an authoritative guide to zines and alternative publications. Each large issue will be packed with hundreds of reviews of independent and unusual publications. Every issue of Factsheet 5 will catalog and review an abundance of zines – complete with price, critical reviews, and ordering information. Additionally, it will include informative articles on zine culture, independent publishing, lively columns, interviews with self-publishers, and an extensive news section.

SENDING STUFF FOR REVIEW

We will review zines and alternative/independent publications. We suggest you enclose a separate card clearly stating the sample price and subscription price. Also print the ordering address, email address/web site, the check endorsement name, and if you regularly review zines, books, videos, comics, or records. You can also tell us if you want submissions, if you require an age statement, if you regularly print reader letters, if you offer free prisoner subs, and the page count for that issue. Some people love trading, while others are more selective or don’t want to be bothered at all by unsolicited trades. Feel free to state your preference on the card.

WHAT WE WILL REVIEW

Besides zines and independent publications, F5 will also review books, music and videos. Preference will be given to DIY independent projects, although books from major publishers and music from major labels will not be automatically excluded. Music of all styles welcome!

WHERE TO SEND REVIEW MATERIALS:

Factsheet 5
PO Box 4660
Arlington, VA 22204

SUBSCRIPTIONS

Factsheet 5 will publish quarterly (4 times/year). Although the magazine has been on hiatus for three years, all current active subscribers will have their subs honored and fulfilled. The cover price for the magazine will be $4.95. Single copy sample will be $5.00 by mail. A one-year subscription (4 issues) is $15.00 ($25.00 for first-class delivery).

Clinton Walker’s classic book on Australian post-punk indie rock, Inner City Sound, came out in 1982 and has been unavailable on the face of the earth for most of the years since.

However, some enterprising preserver of culture has recently seen fit to make available a bound photocopy of the entire book.

Inner City Sound stemmed from the fanzine Pulp done by Walker and Bruce Milne in the late seventies. The book was a digest of the first four issues and material from the never-released fifth issue, plus articles from other places such as Roadrunner (an Adelaide semi-pro fanzine which ran from 1978 to 1982).

The book covers the first burst of Australian indie bands of the time, the bands coming before the explosion in Australian indie rock of the mid- to late-eighties. It’s well-written and covers its field brilliantly.

The photocopied bootleg is of quite usable quality. The original book was all black and white with a decent font, so the photocopy is quite readable and the photos don’t suffer terminally.

I’m amazed that a book this valuable and informative is so hard to find any trace of. As you can guess, I consider it an essential educational tool for all, and a powerful weapon in fighting back the aggressive ahistoricality of the popular culture machine. Get a copy. Memorise it. Treasure it.

Where can you get your copy of the bootleg? … On that, I couldn’t possibly comment.

Further reading:

* Clinton Walker’s second book on the subject, Stranded: The Secret History of Australian Independent Music, 1977-1991 (Macmillan, 1996 – ISBN 0-732-90883-3) – “‘Stranded’ is the story of the marginalisation of the music movement – and its eventual victory. Clinton Walker published Australia’s first punk fanzine in 1977 and, as the country’s leading music critic in the ’80s, chronicled the independent scene.”
