Brave refusal to censor semi alternative single by Clear Channel station

Accidentally heard on Mix 101.1 this afternoon, the Ben Folds single ‘Rockin’ the Suburbs’… but not the radio edit. When you hear RtS on MMM, you get a radio edit with the long ‘Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!’ covered in crashing sounds, similarly the line ‘all my shitty tracks’ (or something like that) is obscured. Today, Mix 101.1 played the song without these modern bleeps.

What seems to have happened today is that RtS is at #40 on Mix FM’s hot 40, and they have just played the single without realising. I don’t know, I’d like to think they bravely decided that radio edits are corrupt and anti-artistic, but the song’s position at #40 suggests to me that they’ve never heard of it and didn’t realise they needed a radio edit.

Does anyone know if the radio edit is part of the single (ie supplied by the artist/record company), or have MMM created their own radio edit?

  1. Im pretty sure that the radio edit is on the single, i know the national yoof network have played both edit and non edit, with no distinction about when to play what.
