I said previously I’d have the rest of Vortex up by the end of 2020, no worries. This proved incorrect.
But! Brad Lambert sent me the scans of issues 4 to 6 afresh! And scans of Vortex #4 are up for your delight now!
This issue (May–June 1987): Palisades, Scientists, The Cult, Sparklers, Reels, New Order, Matt Johnson/The The, Errol H. Tout, The Clash (1982), and live and record reviews.
#5 and #6 will follow before the end of time — on the Party Fears World Service page.
And ’80s Australian indie rock fans will be delighted to hear that Brad is also scanning his old copies of B-Side.
Still in search of The Harvey and FreakZine … and any of the many other Perth zines of the era.
I think this means you’re officially older than me.
If you wanted to go down a technical rabbit hole, you could vectorize these in Inkscape, de-halftone the photos in GIMP, and wrap them back up as OCR’d ISO-15930 PDF/X files, which you could then upload to the Internet Archive. The main reason I’m familiar with this process is that my brother has done some of this (minus uploading to the Internet Archive), only using Adobe, for his alumni nonprofit at nhym-alumni.org. It’s a great way to spend/waste a lot of time, lol.
Correction: ISO-19005 PDF/A, not ISO-15930 PDF/X.
I assure you that I have absolutely zero plans to go to that much effort. Besides, I’m quite pleased to have successfully recovered the precise halftone dots on these scans.
