Mp3 servers: missing in action?

Mp3 servers…where are you?

So, here’s the deal, I’ve spent the past year or two collecting records, ripping, downloading, and otherwise just amassing my entire cd collection on my hard drive(s) – so where’s the community of people out there who have 700 CDs online?

Napster, Morpheus and Kazaa are just fine if you want bad filenames and limited selection, but what else is there for us? An ftp community? Better P2P software? I don’t know, but perhaps you do…

  1. Well, i’d let you know about mine (its a linux box seriving http/ftp with my ripped cd/dvd collection), but i’d have a RIAA notice on me within minutes, and my isp wouldnt like that.

do a quick google search for “overpeer”

the RIAA are scouring kazaa, gnutella, edonkey, open ftp dir’s like oth.net as well as irc/dcc networks.

most dont stay up for more than a week or so.

    its pretty tight.

i’d pay for audiogalaxy right now.

    *sob*

  2. The most common arrangement I’m seeing is laptops full of
MP3s going from one friend to another. I have, occasionally,
left some of my collection somewhere a friend could get at
it, but the combination of crappy client software, volume
charging for data, and the RIAA, have made me very leery
of going anywhere near what’s left of the P2P world.

Of course, now that I finally have a laptop of my own,
the 40GB disk in it simply isn’t big enough. Looks like
I’ll have to get an external firewire drive…
